Admissions

South Coast Educational Collaborative (SCEC) has a rolling admissions process and typically has openings in each program throughout the year. The admissions process is designed to ensure each child is placed appropriately as needed to reach their maximum potential.

Students who would benefit from placement in SCEC’s programs:
  • Will be or have been referred by their school district; and
  • Have an individualized Education Program (IEP), or
  • Need an Extended Evaluation or Interim Alternative Educational Setting (Click HERE for more information)

Admission Process

Step One: Referral from the Sending School District Families typically work with their school district to begin the admissions process. It is helpful to have a complete referral packet from the district in advance of a visit to make the visit as productive as possible and to guide families to visit the appropriate classrooms. There are some circumstances when the sending district may make a special request for a family to visit before all the paperwork has been shared with SCEC.

Step Two: Intake Assessment Review SCEC will review the referral packet, discuss options with the referring district and gather additional data. This process usually is completed within 72 hours of receipt of a packet.

Step Three: Take a Tour of SCEC An admissions representative will host the family and student throughout the visit. The family and student tour the school building, meet staff and students, and observe classrooms in action. The visit lasts approximately one hour and concludes with an opportunity to ask follow up questions.

Step Four: Placement Determination Once the assessment review and tour are complete, SCEC staff determine whether the program is a good fit and can address the unique learning needs of the student (i.e., physical, behavioral and social/emotional, and cognitive). A determination is then sent to the sending district, and a timeline for admission is proposed. If no seats are available, a wait list is maintained, especially when it is anticipated that an opening will be available within 2 months. If the time between the original referral and the availability of a seat is more than 2 months, SCEC may ask to re-evaluate the student to ensure that the placement is still a good fit.

Step Five: Complete Welcome Packet An SCEC Admissions Welcome Packet must be completed by the family prior to the student starting in the program. The packet includes information about emergency contacts, health forms, and other required documentation.
